Keith learned to play in Darlington at the age of 7, playing the cornet. He also played Soprano Cornet before moving to Middlesborough where he played cornet and then horn. On moving to Bournemouth he joined the horn section of Boscombe Band.

His most embarrassing moment came when marching along Bournemouth promenade with the band whilst filming for Thora Hird's "Praise Be" BBC TV programme he tripped over the camera crew's cable! His best banding moments came when playing on Boscombe's solo horn section when they were the solo band at the Royal Albert Hall and reaching the 2009 National Finals with Downton Band.
