Zoe Hancock

Flugel Horn

zoe hancock

Zoe Hancock's interest in brass bands began at the age of 6 when she attended the learners group of St Dennis Band. There she fell in love with the sound that a battered old silver plated flugel horn produced. Zoe soon progressed through to the youth band and at the age of 9 played her first contest with the senior band. She gained more knowledge and skills by competing in solo contests throughout Cornwall and has won many prizes.

She joined the Cornwall Youth Brass Band at the age 10 and attended her first course with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain at easter 2006 - a fantastic experience for her to play with talented players from some of the top bands in the country. Easter 2007 saw Zoe appointed principal flugel horn of the NYBBGB, a great honour for her.

She is the current holder of the Harry Mortimer Solo Award (competed for annually by the members of the NYBBGB) and will be defending her title later this year.

Zoe is currently studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and is thoroughly enjoying the new challenges there. She has recently joined Tredegar Town Band as their flugel horn player and is looking forward to gaining further experience during her time with them. Her most recent achievement was as a finalist in the Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist Competition 2010.
