Favourite Music Far too many titles to include but any music of Vaughan Williams, Delius, Butterworth, Elgar, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Ireland, Bernstein, Michel Legrand, John Lennon, Abba, The Bee-Gees.
John is a first generation Salvationist having been introduced to the Army by the parents of his friend David Wilkinson at the age of 10. Attendance at Sunday school eventually led to becoming a learner and subsequently joining the YP Band under the leadership of Norman Cutler and, for the majority of the time, Roy Doncaster. Initially playing second cornet, John spent most of his time in the YP Band on euphonium.
In 1961 he transferred to the senior band (Courtney Bosanko) on Eb Tuba. From 1962 until 1965 John joined the RAF Music Services as a Tuba player serving at RAF Uxbridge, Locking and Akrotiri. On his return to the Corps he became the band's principal Eb tuba which remains his current position.
In 2009 John attained a PhD in composition from Salford University under the auspices of Peter Graham and holds a Master of Arts (Dist.) degree in composition. He also is a Fellow of the Trinity College of Music, Licentiate of the Trinity College of Music and an Associate of the Royal College of Music.
John, a retired Facilities Manager, is married to Diane who is the Corps pianist and they have two children - Timothy and Holly - and a granddaughter - Abigail.
