Easter comes Earley!

The Band undertook its first 'away' engagement of the year with a visit to Reading and the Corps at Lower Earley. After an uneventful journey and a filling tea we settled in to enjoy the concert. The report that follows comes from Dean Jones and you can also see the full programme.

The perfect way to go into the official British summer time for Reading Lower Earley corps was to host Boscombe Band in the hope that they may bring some of the seaside sunshine with them! What an evening was had by all who attended. Extra chairs were still being put out as the band lined up ready to march in to the hall. The 150-strong congregation were, from the first to the last note, treated to a feast of sparkling brass banding – but with a sincere Christian message being abundantly made clear.

Under the inspired leadership of Bandmaster Howard Evans, the band showed beautiful control as well as the capacity for exciting and inspirational playing. Three resounding solos as well as the fresh-as-ever Celebration of Contemporary Gospel Songs by William Himes were the features of the first half which concluded with an exciting adaptation by William Gordon of the Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem. The technical work needed for the piece proved to be well within the bands’ capability and they showcased their great skill with ease.

The second half was focussed upon the Easter story, climaxing in the band's rendition of Kenneth Downie’s lyrical setting of He Can Break Every Fetter. With Bandmaster Evans compèring the programme as well as conducting the band, the congregation were both put as ease but also spiritually affirmed. Scripture was the thread between many of the pieces played and there was a warmth and sincerity about all the band did.

The band's final major work of the evening was Major Leslie Condon's thrilling The Call of the Righteous which drew tumultuous applause. On an evening where many were visiting the Salvation Army for the first time, the concept of silent appreciation as well as heralded applause was a significant talking point. Having received a wholehearted thanks from the hosting corps and a benediction prayed, the band left a wonderful message that summed up how everyone felt as they left the hall – I'll walk with God.
